Snl24 | From The Queen to X-Ray star: Actor’s new role!

Mlamli Mangcala, who said when the acting roles went dry, he turned to his medical career.

FORMER The Queen actor Mlamli Mangcala wants actors to plan for the future.

He urged fellow artists to have a backup plan in case their careers face challenges.

Mlamli, who portrayed Captain Sithembiso Radebe on The Queen, recalled how he turned to his radiography qualification when acting opportunities became scarce.

Instead of feeling defeated, he returned to medicine, working as a qualified radiographer, operating specialised scanning machines for medical imaging.

Additionally, Mlamli offers health advice to his fans, emphasising the importance of staying healthy and avoiding unnecessary medical scans.

The 50-year-old Cape Town actor acknowledges the transient nature of the entertainment industry.

“I maintained my qualification from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. It’s mine, and no one can use it against me. Artists need to think independently because the arts industry is unpredictable,” Mlamli explained.

“After The Queen, there was a time when I felt that the industry had cancelled me. This is because it was difficult to get acting gigs. But I had to do something, and my qualification came on board,” he said.

He highlighted his experience in brand marketing, notably his 2010 campaign for an international sneaker brand during the World Cup.

In 2020, Mlamli accused Ferguson Films of exploitation, claiming he incurred personal expenses while working on The Queen.

Despite these challenges, he remains proactive in addressing industry issues and continues to engage in arts projects as a hobby.
