Snl24 | How Nyawo nearly dumped Uzalo!

Actor Cebolenkosi Mthembu, who says patience is what keeps him going.

WHEN Cebolenkosi Mthembu worked as an extra in Uzalo for four years, he almost gave up on his dreams.

But he recalled the importance of excelling at work and being patient. After four years of appearing on screen for less than a minute, his patience finally paid off.

Today, he’s one of the most celebrated and loved cast members of Uzalo.

Cebolenkosi, from Manguzi in northern KZN, plays the role of the funny and corrupt detective Nyawo, who speaks in big English.

He credits his success to patience and hard work.

“When I joined Uzalo in 2015, I thought everything would happen quickly. I thought I would become popular quickly. But I was made to wait for my time. I almost quit. I nearly dumped the show. But then I remembered to be patient and do my job perfectly. I remembered that in life nothing is too small,” he said.

“I may have thought I was given the smallest role in the biggest show. But that small role landed me where I am today. I’m well-known and am called a celebrity today.”

Cebolenkosi, who also works as a radio DJ, comedian, and member of the Clermont Choir, shared his story to encourage the youth to work hard and wait for their moment.

“Everyone has their own dreams. But sometimes things don’t go as planned. That’s when patience comes in. Once you’re patient, the spirit of quitting won’t prosper,” he said.

“I say this because I know most people have lost hope. Some have turned to crime and substance abuse because they couldn’t wait. Good things come to those who wait.”

Cebolenkosi shared his story to celebrate Youth Month.
