Orlando Pirates should have been awarded at least two penalties during their victory against rivals Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby, according to retired referee Victor Hlungwani.

The Buccaneers made it back-to-back wins over bitter neighbours Amakhosi with a 3-2 victory in front of a sold-out FNB Stadium on Saturday.

Goals came from Monnapule Saleng, who scored twice, and Thabiso Lebitso, who added a third in between Saleng’s brace for Pirates, while Ashley Du Preez struck twice in the first half for Chiefs.

Reviewing the match of SABC Sports’ SoccerZone, Hlungwani explained why Pirates should have been awarded two penalties.

“There is a penalty appeal, but let’s see if Msimango played the ball or the man,” Hlungwani said.

“There is something we call ‘jumps at an opponent’, let’s see if he jumped for the ball or an opponent

“Look, he jumps for an opponent. So, when a player jumps at an opponent it’s a penalty offence, so a penalty should have been awarded for jumping at the opponent.

“There was not intention to play the ball, so he played the man and here we play the ball, this is not rugby. In rugby, you can do that, but in football, we play the ball, so that’s a clear penalty.

“The next one is when we see the same Mabasa, he puts the ball in space, so now when they put the ball in a space, the referee (is) in proximity.

“Now comes [Edson] Castillo and when Castillo made that challenge, did he prevent the player (Mabasa) from going to an advantageous position? The answer is yes, so another penalty should have been awarded for preventing an opponent from getting into an advantageous position.”

Additionally, Hlungwani revealed that Amakhosi midfielder Yusuf Maart should have received his marching orders after a dangerous tackle on Monnapule Saleng.

The defeat saw Chiefs slip down to seventh of the league table, while Bucs climbed up to second spot.
