UMKHONTO Wesizwe (MK) party leader Jacob Zuma has made a U-turn and decided to reinstate the party secretary-general who resigned last week.
Arthur Zwane tendered his resignation on Monday, 1 July, citing an excessive workload from MK and a desire to focus on private business.
He had been in the position for just over two weeks.
The former Mzansi president said he decided not to accept Zwane’s resignation because “the MK Party’s founding HUVO (strategic workshop) in Bela Bela outlined pivotal tasks essential for preparing us for future challenges, particularly strengthening our organizational structures in anticipation of the upcoming 2026 local government elections and beyond”.
MK spokesman Nhlamulo Ndhlela announced that Zwane was back at work with immediate effect.

“Given the turbulent times our country is experiencing under the current DANC coalition, and with all South Africans looking to the MK party for leadership, maintaining strong capacity, unity, and continuity within our ranks is more important than ever. In this context, the president and secretary-general met recently to finalise the details of comrade Zwane’s return to office,” he said.
He said that to further strengthen MK’s internal human capital, Dr Sifiso Maseko, who succeeded Zwane, will be transferred to the human resources department within the party.
Ndhlela noted that the department was a key component in their efforts to enhance the operations of the organisation, particularly in establishing structures and offices throughout the country.
He highlighted that as the official opposition party, MK faced an unprecedented task in holding the ANC and DA-led Government of National Unity (GNU) accountable.
“Unlike any other official opposition party since 1994, we must, on behalf of the poor and oppressed, ensure that this unholy and anti-black DANC coalition is held accountable for its aim to reverse the gains made thus far and its failures to address rampant unemployment, poverty, homelessness, and landlessness, which continue to negatively affect the black people of this country,” Ndhlela added.
