Kaizer Chiefs Cavin Johnson has provided an update on the progress of defender Luke Fleurs, who is yet to make a long-awaited debut as Amakhosi continue preparations for the new season.

The 2021/22 PSL Young Footballer of the Season joined Amakhosi following a lengthy assessment at Kaizer Chiefs Village. Fleurs had become a free agent after surprisingly terminating his contract with SuperSport United.

The acquisition of Fleurs was a coup for the Glamour Boys and a player the Chiefs faithful have longed to see in the gold and black. Chiefs had been long admirers of the centre-back, and even pursued the 23-year-old before SuperSport tied him down on a long-term contract. This prompted Amakhosi to recruit teammate Thatayaone Ditlhokwe, on a pre-contractual agreement in January 2023.

Speaking at a community outreach event where Chiefs and sponsor Vodacom were donating school shoes on Thursday, Johnson shed light on Fleurs’ progress and what the 23-year-old adds to the Amakhosi squad.

“Oh he’s very close,” Johnson said.

“Look he (Fleurs) is very close as far as that is concerned. Yes, he came in, probably three-quarter to the season as a free agent and he had to work very hard to get himself a club. He got Kaizer Chiefs as his next destination, he started at the Village and he had to work very very hard.

“But since we closed in December, for those few weeks, he has come back looking a lot fresher and now that he has started training in our one-and-a-half-week camp. He’s been looking very very sharp.

“He brings a different type of central defender and gives us also of options as far as how we like to play.

“So we are hoping he brings that even more into the game and we just reap from what we brought.”

Chiefs return to competitive action when they take on TS Galaxy on 13 February at FNB Stadium.
