FORMER Free State Premier Ace Magashule and his ex-personal assistant Moroadi Cholota appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court on Monday, August 12.

Cholota, who was extradited from the US last week, is facing fraud, corruption, and money laundering charges.

She’s implicated with the 17 accused in the R255 million asbestos tender scandal that happened back in 2014.

State prosecutor, Advocate Johan de Nysschen submitted to the court that they need more time to review Cholota’s affidavit as they intend to oppose bail.

The NPA has ruled out that Cholota has been incarcerated for four months in the US and her extradition application to South Africa was approved earlier in June.

NPA Spokesman, Mojalefa Senokoatsane further explained that they won’t disclose reasons around Cholota’s case.

“At the present moment, we won’t reveal any information. We’ll only do so when we respond to the defence’s affidavit. The defence submitted a copy of the affidavit this morning. We need more time to review it and respond to something that we understand. Cholota only started to be detained in South Africa on Friday, 9 August,” he said.

Cholota has joined her former boss Ace Magashule, prominent businessman Edwin Sodi, former Human Settlement MEC Olly Mlamleli, and others in the matter.

Cholota was brought to South Africa escorted by heavily armed Interpol, NPA, and South African police after US Judge, Erin Aslan, of Maryland District Court approved her South Africa extradition earlier in June this year.

Magashule’s African Congress for Transformation spokesman, Mohau Khumalo said the NPA is punishing Cholota for no reason.

Cholota’s lawyer, Advocate Loyiso Makaplela told the court her client pleads not guilty to all charges. The case has been postponed to Tuesday, 13 August.
