DUE to the high rise in crime, Thembisa in Ekurhuleni has become a series of gated communities with boom gates to control access.

What happens now when the boom gate is stolen?

This is one of many questions asked by the community of Ivory Park after they woke up to a missing boom gate on Sunday morning, 7 July.

It was reportedly installed two weeks ago.

To curb crime, residents in Ivory Park extension 3 installed a boom gate on a passage used as an escape route by thugs in cars.

The boom gate was supposed to prevent cars from entering and exiting through the passage in Motsamai Mabula Crescent, but residents woke up to a shock on Sunday as the other part of the gate was missing.

Community leader Sifiso Sithole said this was a first.

He said it was something they had never heard of before.

“The reason we installed this gate two weeks ago was because we noticed an increase in drugs and the crime rate, and the passage is used by thugs as an escape route.

“Having the boom gate was a good move because last week there were two hijackings, and the tsotsis failed to use the passage. They used the main road instead. Now half of it is gone,” said Sifiso.

Another community member, known as Bobo, suggested that all illegal scrapyards be closed because they make it easy for nyaopes to steal and sell to them.

Ekurhuleni spokeswoman Captain Neldah Sekgobela voiced her dismay regarding the incident.

“The police are investigating the matter,” Sekgobela said.
