Snl24 | Khune & Nwabili: Latest On Chiefs Keeper’s Future

POLOKWANE, SOUTH AFRICA – JANUARY 06: Itumeleng Khune Carling All-Star XI during the Carling Knockout match between Stellenbosch FC and Carling Knockout All-Star XI at Peter Mokaba Stadium on January 06, 2024 in Polokwane, South Africa. (Photo by Philip Maeta/Gallo Images)

Itumeleng Khune’s future at Kaizer Chiefs is still not clear and the Siya crew takes a look behind the scenes to see if he could remain at Amakhosi next season.

The next five months will be crucial to determine whether Khune might join Sekhukhune United for the new campaign, or reestablish himself as an important figure at Chiefs.

Siya sources at both Babina Noko and Amakhosi have indicated that talks may be ongoing between the two clubs on how to handle Khune’s situation.

The sources have added that Chiefs may still be interested in offering Khune a position at the club beyond his playing days. Then there is Sekhukhune United who may be willing to give Khune a playing contract.

“You know the next five months are very crucial for Chiefs and Khune regarding his future. It’s a catch 22 situation as they are caught between a hard place and a rock. They want to keep him for other duties even if he is not on a playing contract and then there is the Sekhukhune United situation where he looks at a future which would end very well for him,” said the Siya source.

“Chiefs could have tough decisions between now and June when his contract comes to an end and they are looking at that. When he returns to the team this month after suspension a lot will be at stake for both the club and the player and it will determine his future as well.”

A second Siya source stated that there are two factors that Khune could be considering to determine whether he stays at Chiefs or not.

“The first is that Sekhukhune are seriously interested in him. And the second one is that Chiefs want to offload two goalkeepers to open up space for their Chippa United target Stanley Nwabili. That gives Khune something to think about regarding his final decision. Is he sure he will stay at Chiefs if they sign another goalkeeper or will he go to Sekhukhune?” asked the second Siya source.

“There is a lot riding on this and that’s why the next five months are very crucial on his future and where it will all end up. Before the suspension there could have been no doubt that Chiefs will offer him another position at the club even if he retires from playing but now things may not be the same. Only time will tell now,” the source observed.

Soccer Laduma contacted both Sekhukhune United and Chiefs for comment but no response was received at the time of publishing this story.
