With Orlando Pirates understood to be in search of a coach to replace Sergio Almenara in Jose Riveiro’s technical team, there has been a surprising name listed among potential candidates. 

Following their successful triumph of the Nedbank Cup to conclude yet another impressive season, the Buccaneers confirmed parting ways with Almenara who has gone back to Spain to be closer to his family.

While Mandla Ncikazi will still be there alongside Riveiro for the start of the new season as per the plans, the club will be expected to fill the gap left by Almenara in the technical team, considering the increased workload due to the team’s return to the CAF Champions League.

According to sources, Riveiro will be expected to decide in the coming weeks about the finalisation of his technical team.

Meanwhile, rumours have been doing the rounds in the fraternity that Steve Komphela could be one of the coaches to be considered for the Bucs role. 

However, Siya sources have indicated that Riveiro will possibly search for his new right-hand man in Europe, with Bucs also set to travel to Spain next month for their pre-season.

“There won’t be a rush (in filling Pirates’ assistant coach role), and a decision will be made in due course. The coach could decide to bring someone from Europe like he did the last time,” said the source.

Having coached Kaizer Chiefs, and after his recent spells with Mamelodi Sundowns and Moroka Swallows respectively, Komphela is understood to be focused on the Golden Arrows project for now where he has been tasked with improving the team and its players as their head coach.

The mentor has also been linked with Sekhukhune United since the season finished, while some local media reports suggested that Tanzanian giants Simba have even shown interest in him.
