LOYISO Nkohla-Mabandla’s widow has urged residents not to harm the man wanted by the Hawks in connection with the murder of her husband.

Nyameka KwaLunga Mabandla said this outside the Athlone Magistrates Court on Thursday, 23 May, when three men arrested for the murder of her husband appeared.

Speaking to Daily Sun, she expressed her wish for Mpumelelo Shumane, also known as Mancane and wanted by the Hawks in connection with Loyiso’s murder, to be found alive.

“I want him to speak his side of the story of what happened,” she said.

Nyameka worries that since Mpumelelo is wanted, he could be killed by residents out of anger or by other people who would think he will expose them.

“He’s probably wanted not only by cops but other people as well. I hope and pray that he’s caught by the Hawks first. There could be others who are after him. We never know,” said Nyameka.

She said knowing that there’s still someone outside gives her mixed feelings.

Nyameka said even though she isn’t happy that someone is still roaming the streets, she’s relieved that at least the Hawks are hunting him down.

“The trial is going to reveal a lot of things. For the one who is still wanted, I’m calling out to his family to help us. He has a family, and I believe they can assist us to know his whereabouts.”

Nyameka said she was shocked to learn about Mpumelelo’s age.

Other suspects, Zukisa Tshabile (38), Mziyanda Mdlungu (38) and Mzubanzi Chulayo (41), appeared in court on Thursday.

Chulayo was supposed to apply for bail, but the case was postponed to 20 June for bail application.

Hawks spokeswoman in the Western Cape Warrant Officer Zinzi Hani said they are looking for Mpumelelo to assist them with the investigation.

“Mpumelelo is identified as the person who can assist in the investigation of a murder case where Loyiso Nkohla was killed on 17 April 2023 at the Phillippi train station. The Hawks have since been probing the case, and request anyone who might shed some light on the whereabouts of Shumane (see attached picture) to kindly contact Investigating Officer Sergeant SZ Hlatshaneni on 082 479 6265,” said Hani.
