KickOff has been able to get the real reason Orlando Pirates defensive midfielder Makhehlene Makhaula collapsed on the pitch during their Saturday night Nedbank Cup fixture against Hungry Lions FC.

Makhaula was unable to finish the match as he was stretchered off the pitch.

The Buccaneers comfortably won the Nedbank Cup last 16 match by 4 goals to 0, beating second-tier side Hungry Lions at Orlando Stadium.

The score was 1-0 in favor of the Soweto giants when the 34-year-old workaholic fell to the ground in the 41st minute.

According to a source close to the player, the former AmaZulu FC midfield general was attacked by a serious pain on the left-hand side of his stomach, causing him to fall to the ground.

The match had to be stopped for five minutes as the medical personnel attended to Makhaula, who left the field on a stretcher five minutes later.

“The boy is fine. Ube ne hlaba. The word we got on the day of the incident is that he collapsed, but the player does not remember exactly what happened,” a source close to the player tells this publication.

“Then only thing he saw when he finally regained his consciousness were the oxygen masks that were on him. The guy had a very sharp sudden pain on his abdomen, and as a result, he couldn’t breathe properly.

“But the doctors performed the tests on him and they were also scared because everything looked normal and healthy. There was nothing serious, but they did advise him to drink a lot of water.

“Good news for the Pirates faithful is that Makhaula might miss only one match before he is declared fit to play again. What’s next is, he will follow doctors’ orders, and take things easy just to see how his body responds.
