THE Nqoleko family from KwaSjula Village in Tsomo, Eastern Cape, is grappling with the loss of their 17-year-old son Masibulele Nqoleko, who was killed by a mob accusing him of stealing a bottle of brandy.
The incident has left the family seeking assistance to bury their child and for justice following the barbaric act committed by villagers.
Mob attack detailsAccording to Nosipho Nqoleko, Masibulele was forcibly taken to a neighbourās house by the mob where they tied him up with ropes around his legs and hands and hanged him from a fence.
“As he was hanging, they beat him with whatever they had until he was unconscious,” she recounted.
Masibulele died before he could be brought home.
Uncertainty and legal failuresNosipho was confusion over theft accusation, noting that the allegedly stolen brandy was found, yet no clear details were provided about what Masibulele supposedly took. She criticised the legal system as individuals responsible for her nephew’s death were released on bail shortly after their arrest.
“I don’t understand how people who killed a minor, after such brutal acts, were allowed to be released,” she said.

Social media incitementFurther complicating the family’s grief, a social media post by the homeowner where Masibulele was killed stated that the village had resolved to kill thieves.
Nosipho argued that the post incites violence and that the author should face legal consequences.
She emphasised a need for the law to provide equal treatment to all citizens, regardless of their economic status.
Family’s struggle and police confirmationThe family is also facing threats from the community and financial difficulties, relying solely on an old age grant. Nosipho revealed that a local loan shark’s exploiting the family’s vulnerability.
Police spokeswoman Lieutenant-Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa confirmed three suspects aged between 35 and 65 were arrested for murder in Tsomo on Sunday, 30 June.
āThis follows a 17-year-old boy was brutally murdered at KwaSijula Village outside Tsomo on Sunday, 30 June, around 3am. It’s alleged that the deceased was suspected to be involved in housebreaking, and a group of community members assaulted him, and he succumbed to his injuries,ā said Mawisa.
The suspects appeared in court on Monday, 1 July for a bail hearing, and further legal actions are pending.
The community and the family are still reeling from shock and calling for justice to be served to prevent such incidents in the future.
