Masutane Othilia Sebetha from Thembisa is the first to graduate in her family.
IN many African cultures, firstborn children are revered as leaders and curse-breakers, tasked with carrying the family’s hopes and shaping its future.Â
And Masutane Othilia Sebetha from Thembisa, Ekurhukeni, is proof of that.Â
The 38-year-old wife, mother of three, firstborn and breadwinner is the first to graduate in her family.Â
Masutane recently graduated from Unisa with a Bachelor of Education in Intermediate Phase Teaching.Â
Speaking to Daily Sun, she said she has come a long way.Â
“Looking back, I’m beyond happy. This is a dream come true.”Â
Masutane journey to success was not easy. Â
Seventeen years ago, at 21, she fell pregnant.Â

âAt the time, things were a lot at home. I moved from my grandparents to go live with my mother. Life changed. I no longer had everything I always wanted. Things got worse. I was not working, nor was my mum.Â
âIt even got worse when I fell pregnant because it was like I added another burden to the family.Â
âBut with this background, I knew I needed to break the cycle and change our lives for the better,” she said.Â
Masutane Othilia Sebetha from Thembisa is the first to graduate in her family.
In 2008, Masutane got a job at a local restaurant, where she worked until 2012, and eventually landed a job as a petrol attendant at a local filling station, where she currently works.Â
Determined to pursue her higher education in 2017, Masutane said she applied to enrol for a Bachelor of Education in Intermediate Phase Teaching for the 2018 academic year at Unisa.Â
However, she was accepted to enrol for a higher certificate qualification.Â
Not one to be missed by opportunities, Masutane passed the higher certificate and enrolled for her degree in 2019.Â
âI faced a lot of challenges throughout my degree. Having to juggle work, school, being a mom and a wife and maintaining my house duties. I often found myself exhausted and fatigued. There were times when I failed my modules, but I knew I had to push through,” she said.Â
Fast forward to 2024, Masutane has graduated and is ready to take on the world.Â
“I’m not going to leave my job just yet. I’ll apply until I get a job I want in the field and from there, continue to pursue my honours. My dad had a master’s degree, that’s why I also aim high,” she said.Â
