THE family of the slain JMPD cop has criticised the conduct of the South African Police Service (SAPS) following Nombulelo Mthimkhulu’s death.

They called for harsh measures in handling the case while disputing the police’s version of events.

“What the media wrote about this incident is not the right version. They wrote that a JMPD woman was outraged. The sad thing is that it’s a blatant lie,” Yolo Mthimkhulu said during his mother’s funeral.

“My mum died doing what she had promised to do for the rest of my life. Which is protecting me.”

Mourners gathered at the Mthombo Hall in Dobsonville, Soweto, to bid farewell to the fallen JMPD cop, who was shot and killed allegedly by an SAPS officer on Saturday, 6 April, outside her home.

Yolo recalled the last memory he had of his mum.

“The last time I saw her, she was running from the cop who shot at her. My mum died a painful death. Nombulelo died a painful death,” he said.

He added that his mum has always wanted a big funeral, but not in this manner.

“She had love for everyone. She would always do anything for the children and everyone. Now that she’s gone, our hearts are torn apart, forever. Ma, I’ll always love you. Till we meet again, rest in peace,” the slain officer’s other son, Amahle Mthimkhulu said.

Nombulelo’s brother, Vuzo Mthimkhulu said: “I always had to remind my sister she’s my sister and not my brother. She loved people. As siblings, we used to call ourselves the Big 5. Now, one of us has fallen. We no longer have a bodyguard but an angel.”

Her friends from Sgodiphola in Soweto described Nombulelo as a pillar.

“She loved her cigarette. We’d all go out drinking, and she’d be there with her cigarette and soft drinks. She never touched alcohol, but one would think she was also drunk. That’s how bubbly she was,” they said.
