RESIDENTS of this kasi need help.

The people of Protea Glen in Soweto are desperately pleading for water.

They said their homes have a terrible smell because there’s no water to flush their toilets.

Residents told Daily Sun that their houses are stuffy, and they haven’t bathed for days due to a lack of water for the past eight days.

On Thursday morning, 12 September, residents turned the kasi upside down.

They blocked all entrances and exits of Protea Glen extension 16 with gates, stones, rocks, and burning tyres.

Everything came to a standstill. No car, including public transport such as taxis, was allowed to enter or leave the area.

Local schools and some shops remained closed.

Residents said that with the community divided into four phases, phase 3 experiences inconsistent water distribution most of the time.

Angry resident Evelyn Mukwevho told Daily Sun that easy access to water is a thing of the past.

She said they’re used to not having water for days with no explanation from relevant departments.

“We’ve been having water challenges for more than four months. We’ve exhausted all avenues, but nothing seems to have worked. We’re struggling as if we live in informal settlements.

“If it’s not the constant lack of water, then it’s the load reduction that happens every two days, leaving our appliances damaged,” she said.

Another resident said he hadn’t taken a bath in two days.

“Yes, they are providing us with water tanks, but where are they getting that water from? Most of the time when they deliver this water, I’m at work, so I always miss them,” the resident said.

Addressing the water supply issue on X (formerly Twitter), Joburg Water said that although the major burst pipe in Protea Glen extension 11 was completed, the system is struggling to recover, and pressure remains low.

“It’s estimated that it will take several days for the system to fully recover, especially in extension 16,” Joburg Water said.
