RESIDENTS of Mfuleni kasi in Cape Town are shocked after a fire killed a boy (6) and left his mother hospitalised.
The fire allegedly started under the bed on Saturday morning, 8 June at Esinqawānqawini informal settlement.Ā
Family member Nobanzi Nquma (56) went to the scene in the morning after she received a message about the fire and the death of the little boy.Ā
āAt first, I heard that the shack burnt down. But I didnāt know that even my niece was also injured in the process. I was shocked when I also heard that her son had died. As a family, we are in pain,ā said Nobanzi.Ā
Residents suspect the fire could have been caused by vutha due to how it started.Ā
āThis is vutha. The fire that starts from under the bed is vutha. Also, vutha normally goes straight to its target and doesnāt affect other shacks. How this fire happened looks very much like vutha,ā said a resident. Ā

Sangoma Lonwabo Mqungwan a (59) from Mbekweni outside Cape Town said the fire had signs of vutha.Ā
āVutha fire starts either from the door outside your house or under the bed or your wardrobe. Since it’s a fire sent by someone, it only affects its target, not everyone. This is why only one shack burnt down even though there are many other shacks around it. However, the family must consult to find out what happened. It could be something else,ā said the sangoma.Ā
Fire and Rescue Services spokesman Jermaine Carelse confirmed the incident.Ā
āCrews from Mfuleni, Belhar, Strand and Kuilsriver were on scene, and despite their best efforts, the structure was completely gutted. Six people were displaced, and sadly, a boy was discovered with fatal burn wounds and was subsequently declared deceased by medical staff,ā said Carelse.Ā
Police spokesman Captain Frederick Van Wyk said Mfuleni police registered an inquest case following a shack fire on Saturday at about 2.30am in Saxedown Road, Mfuleni, where a six-year-old child died.Ā
