THE 66-year-old mastandi was last seen by friends on Sunday, 8 September in Thembisa, Ekurhuleni.

The following day, no one checked on him. The madala’s lonely death is a reminder that people need to check on each other regularly, and how he died remains a mystery.

It was only after the power tripped that his body was discovered inside his house.

Since the main switch is inside the house where the 66-year-old madala lived alone, the tenants went to knock and noticed that the door was locked from the inside.

They knocked, and when there was no response, they called community members. Community members came, and a window had to be broken to gain access inside.

Community leader, Sabelo Qhupha said that this has shocked the community that a person can be dead for so many days without being noticed.

“I was called by the tenants. When I arrived, we noticed that the door was locked from the inside. We broke the window from the kitchen so that we could gain entry. We discovered the body,” said Sabelo.

A CPF member, Sibongile Vilakazi, urged people and tenants to check on those living alone.

“It would be a humane thing to check on people, especially those who live alone. It’s Ubuntu. We do not want this sad situation to repeat itself whereby a person would pass with no one noticing on time,” said Sibongile.

The police and community members were called, and he was declared dead on the scene by paramedics.

“The paramedics said that he died of natural causes,” Sabelo said.

SAPS Captain Neldah Sekgobela said normally they don’t open an inquest if a person died of natural causes unless foul play is suspected.
