Snl24 | Teacher suspended for ‘klapping’ pupil

AN Eastern Cape teacher, who was caught on camera allegedly assaulting a pupil, has been suspended by the Eastern Cape Department of Education.

The teacher from Matanzima Junior Secondary School in Maqanyeni Village in Ngqeleni was seen in the video allegedly slapping the pupil and hitting his head against the school desks. It’s alleged he continued to assault the pupil in full view of the class.

As he allegedly assaults the pupil, the teacher can be heard asking: “Uthi nxa nxa kum?,” loosely translated as “you are saying nxa (being rude) to me.”

Eastern Cape Department of Education spokesman, Malibongwe Mtima said the teacher has been suspended pending an investigation into the alleged assault.

“The pupil is undergoing psychosocial support, which includes debriefing and counselling. Those who witnessed the incident will also receive psychosocial support,” said Mtima.

He said the department condemns the incident and has opened an investigation while the teacher is suspended.

Children’s rights activist and Khula Community Development Project spokesman, Petros Majola said teachers have a lot of anger which is misdirected towards pupils.

“Maybe the teacher has his own problems at home and now he took that out on a poor kid. At the moment, we don’t know the reason for his action,” Majola said.

He called on those who are still pursuing their education towards teaching to try and control their tempers as it can lead to them losing their jobs.
