Snl24 | The jinx of the Chiefs coaching job

Jinxed? All four coaches that have come before Nasreddine Nabi at Kaizer Chiefs have failed to move to another club in the PSL.

Nasreddine Nabi has taken over a job that has come with a wave of misfortunes not just while at Kaizer Chiefs but post exiting that head coach post.

All four of the coaches that have held the Chiefs job before Nasreddine Nabi have not coached in the PSL again since they were sacked.

Cavin Johnson, Molefi Ntseki, Arthur Zwane and Stuart Baxter have all not moved on to another DStv Premiership club since they were let go by Amakhosi despite the expectation that it should be easier to get another job after being at such a big club.

Johnson is out in the cold dealing with the consequences of his disastrous time as caretaker coach during which he won six out of 22, leaving Chiefs down to their worst finish in 10th place.

His win rate was the joint-worst return for any coach at the Soweto giants and will have damaging effects considering he won only two out of the last 16 games in charge.

With such results, there is no arguing that Johnson left Chiefs with blood on his hands.

The consequences have been that he has not only been pushed out from the first team but also lost his Head of Academy job, which he was initially hired to do last year.

Whoever becomes his next employer will have to ignore what happened at Naturena.

Ntseki was pushed into the job at the beginning of last season after Chiefs failed to bring in Nabi.

Without prior experience as a head coach in the topflight, Ntseki’s appointment had ‘risk’ written all over it and it turned out to be one that backfired.

The 54-year-old has been on the streets since October, with slim chances of getting another gig as a head coach in the PSL.

With Zwane’s appointment, he was parachuted into the job from the development via assistant coaching roles without having held a head coach job of a senior team before.

Chiefs ran out of patience with him after just a season and has since been kept far from the first team despite still being at the club.

Chances of being a head coach at another top league club are thin.

For the man that Zwane succeeded – Baxter – he has only been to Swedish club Helsingborgs IF.

Baxter turns 71 in August, which discounts the mileage left in him for the stress of handling a dressing room.

Another coach who has not had another job on these shores since Chiefs is Solinas.

Solinas is now at Sudanese club Al Merreikh after working in Tunisia and Saudi Arabia since his stint at Naturena came to an end in December 2018.
