Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department Chief Isaac Mapiyeye is facing sexual assault case.

EKURHULENI Chief of Police, Isaac Mapiyeye, is in hot water over allegations of sexual harassment and misconduct.

The matter is being deliberated by the city council in a meeting in Germiston on Thursday, 29 August.

The sexual harassment and intimidation case is in connection with a complaint filed by an Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) employee whose name is known to Daily Sun but withheld for her protection.

The case was reported to the head of the department, Linda Gasheka, on 12 July 2024.

She said in her complaint: “On 14 July 2024, I started experiencing anxiety and a low mood. The symptoms were characterised by short breath, headaches, forgetfulness and poor concentration. I then reached out to my psychiatrist (name withheld) on 18 July 2024 who immediately recommended that I be admitted. I was admitted at Life Glynnview Hospital on 29/07/2024 and I am currently being treated for anxiety and major depressive disorder.

“As much as I had to gather all my strength and courage to report this case, I am fully aware that this complaint is against a powerful figure who is also my boss. I believe that Mapiyeye is familiar with our sexual harassment policy and as a senior person he is supposed to know what goes against the policy.”

The complainant said after reporting Mapiyeye, he started calling her sister and she submitted the call log.

Private investigator Calvin Rafadi told Daily Sun that the woman turned to him after police gave her the runaround.

“I think they are scared of him since he is their boss. We can’t accept the continued harassment and violence against women,” he said.

On the misconduct matter, the EFF in Gauteng has demanded the immediate release of the report.

EFF provincial chairman Mkululeko Dunga said Mapiyeye has been under investigation for an extended period for allegedly assaulting a heavily pregnant woman who was a contracted security guard with the City of Ekurhuleni. Daily Sun withheld her name for her protection.

“There are strong allegations that he further intimidated the woman to withdraw the criminal charges she had filed against him, threatening her with job loss if she pursued the case and involving other police officials in a cover-up,” he said.

He said the allegations were of serious gravity and must be taken with the urgency they warrant.

Dunga was worried that the investigation, initiated last October, has yet to produce a report. He said this raises serious concerns about potential abuse of power and manipulation of justice.

He said: “The EFF will not remain silent about the victimisation of women, especially by high-ranking officials who believe they are beyond reproach and can cover up their misconduct.

“We caution the city against complacency regarding serious allegations of abuse and harassment. The delay in releasing the investigation report obstructs fair treatment and justice. The report must be finalised and presented to the council without further delay.”

The matter was also reported to the Public Protector but she referred the complainant to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.

City spokesman Zweli Dlamini told Daily Sun that they take the allegations seriously and have treated them with the urgency they deserve.

“That’s why it’s on the agenda today and the council will deliberate on it. Unfortunately, I can’t comment further on it as it will be a closed meeting. But from our side, as administration, we have followed all necessary due processes and we then handed the matter over to the council to deal with it,” he said.
