DR Dorcas Lekganyane, affectionately known as “Didi,” was tragically stabbed to death allegedly by her partner in Bramley, Joburg on Thursday morning, 11 July.
The death of the 32-year-old celebrated academic and internationally respected scientist from Ga-Mothapo in Limpopo has left her family and South Africa shocked.Ā
Her death has not only robbed her colleagues and community of a committed professional but has also highlighted the pervasive issue of gender-based violence that continues to plague Mzansi.Ā
Speaking to Daily Sun, her family spokeswoman Lethabo Lekganyane said they’re struggling to come to terms with her death.

āThe family is distraught, and we are trying to find strength and lean on each other during this hard time. She has left behind a daughter and a family that depended on her,ā she said.
Lethabo also mentioned that they will announce her memorial service, possibly on Tuesday 16 July.
Didi was a prominent voice in the fields of traditional medicine and environmental science.
She was known for her passion and unwavering commitment to cultural inclusivity and biodiversity preservation, both in South Africa and beyond its borders.
At the time of her death, Didi had just been announced as one of Mail & Guardian’s 200 Young South Africans, celebrating her work, influence, and impact in making the world a better place.
Her friends and colleagues turned to social media to share their sorrow and offer their sympathies.
Gauteng police spokesman Colonel Noxolo Kweza said that the cops have opened a murder docket following the incident.Ā
āA 32-year-old woman was found dead with multiple stab wounds. Her partner was also found in the house. He was taken to a local hospital where he was placed under police guard. He will be charged with murder and will appear in court soon,ā Kweza said.
