A SPEEDING minibus taxi caused a tragic accident on Monday, 24 June in Sebokeng, south of Joburg.

Two people died, one was airlifted, and several others were seriously injured.

The taxi, carrying commuters to work, hit a pedestrian on Waterdaal Road near the Boiketlong informal settlement towards Vereeniging.

The taxi lost control, rolled over several times, and ejected passengers, resulting in one fatality.

Witnesses told Daily Sun the taxi was speeding from Sebokeng to Three Rivers when it hit a male pedestrian, who was on his way to catch a taxi to Vereeniging.

“We were woken up by a big bang as the taxi rolled several times. A pedestrian was thrown more than 100km away before the taxi came to a halt,” said a witness.

“One passenger died, one was airlifted, several were rushed to hospital with serious injuries, and the pedestrian died instantly.

“Since the road was repaired a few months ago, motorists treat it like a freeway, leading to numerous accidents. Within two months, more than five people have died on this road already,” the witness added.

Gauteng police spokeswoman Captain Tintswalo Sibeko stated that Vereeniging police are investigating a culpable homicide case.
