AS Mzansi celebrated Workers’ Day on Wednesday, 1 May, unemployed graduates say they have lost hope in the government’s job creation initaitives.
One such graduate is Karabo Raletjena from Mankweng, who says he doesn’t see a need for Workers’ Day.
Karabo is an accounting science graduate from the University of Limpopo.
He now offers transport services to students and Mankweng residents.
Karabo starts his work routine from the university’s gate 2 every morning around 7am.
“I’m a former student of the University of Limpopo and currently a bolt driver in Mankweng and surrounding areas. I’ve decided to start working as a Bolt driver because I’ve spent two years without getting a job. I come to this spot every day from 7am to 7pm,” Karabo said.
“Challenges are there, but I have ways to deal with them and working with different people every day is a bit of a challenge. Some are decent, while others aren’t.”

Karabo said the government must start showing trust in young graduates by giving them jobs in executive positions.
“There are a lot of unemployed young people who are capable. Now, when you go to a work environment, you find old people everywhere. It’s about time the government showed trust in us and gave those executive positions to prove ourselves.”
He expressed that young people must also find other alternatives to make a living.
“As you can see, I’m a whole graduate, but I’ve made a conscious decision to stand up and do something that will put bread on the table. So, young people must not only wait for government to create jobs.”
Asked if he would cast his vote in the upcoming elections, Karabo’s response was a big NO!
“I’m not going to vote because we don’t see any changes. As an unemployed graduate, this day is a constant reminder of the harsh reality young graduates face in the country.”
