Cops have arrested zama zamas in Primrose, Germiston.
THE ongoing illegal mining activities in Primrose and surrounding areas around Ekurhuleni pose a major threat to the community.
In a bid to clamp down on the illegal operations, cops in the Ekurhuleni District, jointly with other law enforcement agencies, acted on Monday, 5 August.Â
The teams managed to put 37 suspects behind bars.Â

“Among others, five were arrested for illegal Mining Act 20 of 1991 and 32 for being illegal immigrants,” said Ekurhuleni police spokeswoman Captain Neldah Sekgobela.Â
She said cops confiscated illegal mining equipment which included phendukas, a stone crushing machine, bags of gold-bearing soil, a gambling machine, and assorted liquor.
Ekurhuleni District commissioner Major-General Anna Sithole praised the joint efforts by the teams involved that led to the arrest and confiscation of illegal mining equipment.
