Snl24 | Warrant of arrest for fong kong cash ‘shoppers’

Former Minister Bongani Bongo and former SAA chairwoman Dudu Myeni are expected in the dock on Friday, 10 May.

THE five alleged criminals who were apprehended on the night of 10 July 2024 in Makapanstad for possession of counterfeit money was held on 8 August 2024 in the Moretele Magistrate Court.

The four men and one woman, who applied for Legal Aid representation, were on a shopping spree using fake money from Mathibestad to Makapanstad. Their Audi A4 was stopped and searched, and the counterfeit money was found in their possession.

Colonel Adele Myburgh, section head for media relations in North West SAPS, confirmed that a case was opened and the five alleged criminals appeared in the Moretele Magistrate Courts on 12 July 2024. They were all released on R1000 bail each.

“Two of the suspects are aged 32. According to one member of patrol policing, a message about a suspicious car was circulated on the sectional groups, and the member went out to monitor it. The suspects made a U-turn after realising the police forum was on the lookout for them. By that time, they had already committed the crime of purchasing items, airtime, and betting vouchers to the value of R1800 using counterfeit money at Napo tuck shop,” he said.

He further said the grey Audi with five occupants drove straight to Makapanstad, where they were intercepted at an intersection, searched, and arrested. Counterfeit money was found in their possession.

“On their way to the holding cells, they threw the fake money out of the van, and we picked it up because we were following the police vehicle,” said one community police forum official who was part of the night crew that helped with the arrests.

“The two police officers on duty couldn’t search all of them because the suspects were five and they (SAPS officers) were only two to perform the search. The five alleged criminals made their first appearance in court on 12 July 2024 on charges of possession of counterfeit money,” he said.

Unfortunately, two of the suspects, Gugulethu Nyathi (28) and Sakhile Ngubane (28), didn’t appear before the magistrate, and a warrant of arrest was issued for them.

The trio, Celani Dube (32), Mpumelelo Moyo (32), and Leon Mpofu (25), were present. The case was postponed to 29 August 2024 to allow the state to conduct further investigations.
