However, she also celebrates her heritage and other cultures. Ā
The Wololo hitmaker, who normally performs her gqom songs wearing bum shorts on stage, said people must not think that because she’s a gqom star, she doesn’t love her heritage and culture.Ā
The 30-year-old musician, songwriter, and choreographer from Lamontville, south of Durban, is proudly Swati, living with amaZulu in KZN. Ā
Babes attended Zulu nation founder King Shakaās commemoration (Umkhosi weLembe) wearing her traditional Swati attire on Tuesday, 24 September, at Stanger High School in KwaDukuza, KZN.Ā
She said although they’re now based in KZN, with her family living with the Zulu nation under King Misuzulu and speaking isiZulu for a long time, she knows that her roots are in Eswatini. Ā
Babes told Daily Sun that she attended Umkhosi weLembe, addressed by King Misuzulu because she always wanted to learn more about other cultures.

āI attended Umkhosi weLembe, and Iām happy to be here. Iām a proud Swati, as you can see that Iām wearing my Swati attire. Iām happy to see different cultures. To me, it is such a fun experience, and Iām enjoying it,ā she said.Ā
The musician said that while she doesnāt undermine Zulu culture, she’ll always value Swati culture and heritage because she is proudly Swati. Ā
Babes, whose real name is Bongekile Simelane, said that although the Simelane people can be found in many places, they’re originally from Eswatini, and many still live there.Ā
When Babes married her late husband, Mandla “Mampintsha” Maphumulo, in 2021, she also wore Swati attire, while Mampintsha wore traditional isiZulu attire.Ā
