CAPE TOWN residents didn’t have kind words for Police Minister Bheki Cele when he attended an imbizo in Hanover Park, a gang-ridden area on the Cape Flats on Sunday, 14 April.
Pastor Dean Ramjoomia said Cele had not done enough to deal with crime on the Cape Flats despite having the capacity to do so.
“You are very popular for coming to our communities with condolences. Do you know what your condolences mean, my man? It’s spitting in the face of our people as the government has done nothing for the last 30 years,” said pastor Ramjoomia
The mfundisi who confronted Cele while residents cheered said Cele has all the resources but fails to deal with crime.
Ramjoomia, who lives in Beacon Valley in Mitchells Plain, said people are living in fear while Cele has enough cops and resources to protect them.
“You have all the resources, all the capacity to alienate and to completely eradicate organised crime. I want to ask you why is that not happening? Why is it not happening when our people are gripped with fear and anxiety,” said Ramjoomia.

Another resident, Thelma Tshabile (43), said some cops are old, and Cele must consider retiring them and giving young people time to go on the streets and chase criminals.
“Many of your officers are old and tired; allow these youngsters to fight crime. We have young people who are ready to do the job, but they don’t have an opportunity because there are no vacancies in the SAPS,” she said.
Cele said he and his cops are working hard to fight crime on the Cape Flats and have called for residents to join hands.
“When it comes to protecting people, we must put politics away, and all work together. We have brought extra resources and extra police cars from other provinces so that they can work at the gangster-infested police stations,” said Cele.
