Snl24 | WATCH: Joburg’s waste woes worsen as Pikitup strike continues!

IT’S a mess on the streets of Joburg as rubbish piles up amid a Pikitup strike.

Contract workers at Pikitup Joburg’s waste management service have downed tools, causing an unsightly stink across the city.

Striking workers accuse management of engaging in unfair labour practices, including allegations of “sex for jobs, nepotism, and exploitation through cheap labour.”

Many workers claim to have worked as casual employees for over five years without being offered permanent positions.

Enos Maake, representing the striking workers, stated that the strike will continue until their demands are addressed.

The situation in Randburg is becoming dire, with rubbish piling up and residents discarding waste indiscriminately.

Pikitup spokesperson Muzi Mkhwanazi said ten depots were affected, and only two were operational after workers downed tools on Monday.

“Pikitup management condemns the actions of the protesters and appeals to them to refrain from violent and threatening conduct, which prevents employees from fulfilling their responsibilities to the residents of the city who have a constitutional right to a clean environment.”

SNL24 videographer Morapedi Mashashe took to the streets of Ranburg to assess the situation.

Rubbish bins are overflowing, with residents leaving their trash out in any open space they can find.

This is causing a massive health and safety hazard.
