Snl24 | WATCH: Lesufi’s cabinet just gimmick

OPPOSITION parties in the Gauteng legislature are unhappy with Premier Panyaza Lesufi’s cabinet announcement.

The much-awaited announcement was made on Wednesday night, 3 July, after two postponements due to clashes between the African National Congress (ANC) and the Democratic Alliance (DA) over positions.

ActionSA described the long-overdue announcement of the executive committee members as “a mere continuation of the same old politics that has brought South Africa’s economic hub to its knees”.

Funzi Ngobeni, ActionSA’s provincial leader, said Lesufi’s return as premier doesn’t reflect the will of Gauteng residents.

“He would do well to study the 2024 provincial election results which were a striking rebuke of a premier whose first term was marked by failure, a series of failed gimmicks, and empty promises, prompting residents to vote to remove him from office,” he said.

He warned residents not to expect real change in the government’s approach, which prioritises PR stunts over practical solutions and political patronage over skilled professionals.

ActionSA identified arresting economic decline and promoting prosperity as its top priority and vowed to oversee the Economic Development Department led by MEC Lebogang Maile.

Ngobeni expressed concern over the decline in critical infrastructure, housing, energy needs, and safety and security under Lesufi’s leadership.

“Furthermore, as criminal gangs continue to wreak havoc across Gauteng, ActionSA expresses concern regarding Premier Lesufi’s decision to centralise the critical function of safety and security within his office chiefly because if his failed crime wardens scheme is anything to go by, the safety and security of residents are at serious risk,” said Ngobeni.

Meanwhile, DA Gauteng leader Solly Msimanga announced their refusal to participate in a government that doesn’t value fairness and principles, opting to return to the opposition benches.

“The Democratic Alliance has a long history of being a strong and unforgivingly thorough opposition. We are both comfortable and proud to enter back into the opposition benches from where we will serve the people of Gauteng,” said Msimanga.
