Itumeleng Khune, Keagan Dolly, Yusuf Maart and now Given Msimango have all had a turn to don the Amakhosi armband this season.
While it is not uncommon for a club to change their on-field leaders, seeing it being done with so much regularity as it has been at Chiefs, has raised one or two causes for concern.
Speaking in response to questions raised in this regard, interim coach Johnson alluded that the players choose their own captain, with Msimango the latest candidate to receive that honour, though this is not an area of major concern for him.
“Well, like I think when you look when you do an analysis of the team in its entirety, then the team is still very young. I think it’s only Itu that has been here for more than 20 years, the other guys are all very young in the team, so it’s who they pick as their captains. If this one is out, if that one is out, Keagan [Dolly] is out, he’s injured. Yusuf [Maart] got injured as well. Itu has been fighting to get fit and to get match fit again and to play,” he told journalists after his side’s loss to Richards Bay.

“So Given is the next best captain. Because I do believe that in any club you have to have 11 captains on the field and not one. The captain is there to toss the coin and make sure you kick the ball right. But other than that you have to have 11 captains on the field, so there’s. There’s no problem with that for me,” he added.
Their latest loss saw Chiefs fall outside the top eight into 10th place, with six matches remaining. Next up for the Glamour Boys is back-to-back fixtures against Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United respectively.Â
