Victory over Spain in the Euro 2024 final on Sunday would make every member of this 26-man squad a national hero.

England have achieved nothing yet. They reached the final of the last European Championship three years ago, only to lose to Italy on penalties.

But reaching the showpiece event at back-to-back Euros is no mean feat. Southgate continues to divide opinion, but no England manager has reached as many major finals as him.

England have hardly set this tournament alight. They were deeply unimpressive in the group stage, edging out Serbia before back-to-back draws with Denmark and Slovenia.

The Three Lions almost fell to defeat by Slovakia in the round of 16. Only a moment of magic from Jude Bellingham deep into second-half stoppage time saved England, who went on to win in extra time.

Things went even closer to the wire against Switzerland. A 1-1 draw after 120 minutes led to a penalty shoot-out, which England won thanks to five perfect kicks and Jordan Pickfordā€™s save from Manuel Akanji.

Southgateā€™s side saved their best showing of the competition for the semi-final. Despite going behind to the Netherlands, England were the better team in the first half in Dortmund.

The match nevertheless looked to be heading to extra time after a stalemate in the second period, only for Ollie Watkins to notch a superb winner in the 90th minute.

Remarkably, that was the first time ever that England have won a knockout game against a major football nation (loosely defined as Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Portugal and the Netherlands) overseas.Ā

If the winner of Euro 2024 was determined based on performances across the tournament, Spain would be crowned champions this weekend.Ā

But it is not. Everything that went before goes out of the window. There is no doubt that Spain have been better than England over the last few weeks, but the score at kick-off on Sunday will be 0-0.

After their near-miss at Euro 2020, England will hope their time has finally come.

Draw – 19/10 (Betfred)It is not difficult to make a case for either team involved in the Euro 2024 final.Ā

Spain are superior collectively. They are well balanced under Luis de la Fuente, who has supplemented midfield control with fast and direct wing play.

England have been less convincing overall, but they have more match-winning individuals in their team and more game-changing options on the bench.

Spain are a team that beats you on flow. England are a side that beats you in moments. Perhaps the two will cancel each other out in the 90 minutes.

England have been slow starters in recent matches, conceding the first goal to Slovakia, Switzerland and the Netherlands.

But no one can doubt this teamā€™s character. Even if they are second best in general play, we like Englandā€™s chances of forcing extra time at a minimum.

Dani Olmo to score or assist – 7/4 (VBET)Six players are tied on three goals in the race to finish as the top scorer at Euro 2024. Only two of the sextet, Harry Kane and Dani Olmo, will take part in the final.

Kane is almost certain to start despite his sub-par performances up to now. But if the England captain is not doing the business, Watkins or Ivan Toney could replace him as early as half-time.

It is hard to see Olmo being withdrawn provided he does not pick up an injury. The RB Leipzig man has been influential at the Euros despite only starting two games up to now.

Deployed in a No.10 role, he is often the furthest player forward for Spain as Alvaro Morata drops deep to link.

Olmo scored one and set up another in the quarter-finals against Germany, before finding the net in the 2-1 victory over France last time out.Ā

No one has been directly involved in as many goals as Olmo at this competition.

England to lift the trophy – 11/10 (Betfred)The longer this match goes on, the more England will feel confident of winning it.Ā

Spain are the favourites to triumph on Sunday. De la Fuenteā€™s men have already eliminated Germany and France this summer, and if they get into their rhythm they will be hard to stop.

But for all the quality in their starting XI, Spain cannot match Englandā€™s strength in depth.

Southgate has the likes of Cole Palmer, Watkins, Toney, Ebere Eze and Anthony Gordon available as attacking reserves. Spain have some good players waiting in the wings, but they are not of the calibre of Englandā€™s back-up options.

Both nations have historically poor penalty shoot-out records, but England will draw confidence from their success against Switzerland in the quarters. Spainā€™s spot-kicks have not been tested yet this summer, while they were knocked out of World Cup 2018, Euro 2020 and World Cup 2022 on penalties.Ā

If this match does go to extra time as we predict, the underdogs England will start to feel the game is theirs to lose.
