Spaniard David Cantero wins Europe Triathlon Cup Quarteira

For a long time it seemed that Austrian Tjebbe Kaindl would win in Quarteira, but thanks to an impressive run it was Spaniard David Cantero who managed to take the first Europe Triathlon Cup victory of this season. Cantero struck in the final kilometers to take the win.

The Olympic distance race started basically by the book and soon a large pack formed in the early stages of the bike. Yet it did not stay that way for long, as Kaindl took off together with Dutchman Ian Pennekamp and the two athletes rode so fast that the athletes behind were unable to catch up. After the 40 kilometers on the bike and thus back in T2, the two men had a lead of over a minute over the chasing pack.

That meant an excellent starting position for Kaindl and Pennekamp and a serious chance to finish on the podum, but during the run Pennekamp soon proved to be short. Kaindl managed to hold on for a long time, but after about seven kilometers he also had to bow his head to first Cantero and then several other athletes. While Kaindl lost sight of his podium position and eventually had to settle for sixth place, Cantero soloed to victory from that point on.

Cantero took the win in a time of 1:45:10. Behind him, Oliver Conway and Maxime Fluri made the battle for silver and bronze particularly exciting, and in the end it was Britainā€™s Conway who just had the faster legs and took the silver in 1:45:19. Swiss Fluri finished third in 1:45:21.
