Spelinspektionen Issues Fine and Warning against Folkspel

Sweden’s gambling regulator, Spelinspektionen, constantly monitors the activity of licensed operators in the country, ensuring their compliance with the established regulatory framework. The gambling watchdog leverages a proactive approach and not only monitors the legal sector but also combats illegal gambling activities.

Breaches of the established gambling regulations can be subject to a wide range of penalties, with monetary sanctions and warnings being some of the most popular. Earlier this week, Spelinspektionen announced another operator in the country was subject to a sanction fee and a warning.

Per an announcement of the gambling watchdog, Folkspel Ideell Förening, an operator that currently holds a lottery license in Sweden, breached the established rules related to age control. Spelinspektionen said an investigation uncovered that the operator had insufficient efforts toward combatting underage gambling.

“The Swedish Gambling Authority has reviewed how the association complies with the requirements for gambling responsibility regarding age limits,“

This, according to the gambling watchdog was in breach of the Swedish Gambling Act, ch. 14. § 3. In light of the breach, the Swedish gambling regulator issued a warning to Folkspel. Additionally, the operator received a sanction of SEK 500,000 ($47,200).

“The Gaming Authority believes that Folkspel does not have sufficient routines and procedures to ensure that minors cannot play. Folkspel has therefore violated ch. 14. § 3 of the Gambling Act, a warning and penalty fee of SEK 500,000 is issued,“

The latest sanction comes on the heels of another fine by Spelinspektionen. Earlier this week, the gambling watchdog confirmed it imposed a $666K fine against Kanon Gaming. At the time, the regulator said that the operator didn’t demonstrate sufficient efforts toward protecting customers who have shown signs of problem gambling.

The hefty SEK 7 million ($665,800) fine against Kanon Gaming followed an assessment conducted by Spelinspektionen. In addition to the six-figure fine, the operator received a warning.
