Amid the ever-changing landscape of the NBA, Golden State Warriors star point guard Stephen Curry knows nothing is guaranteed.
Still, while speaking to Marc J. Spears of Andscape, Curry reiterated his stance that he would like to spend his entire career with the franchise that drafted him seventh overall in 2009.
“It’s tough, right? I’ve always said I want to be a Warrior for life,” Curry said. “At this stage in my career, I feel like that’s possible.”
The Warriors will look different in the 2024-25 season following the departure of Curry’s longtime running mate Klay Thompson, who joined the Dallas Mavericks this offseason. Despite losing his “Splash Bro,” Curry said he believes there are ways for Golden State to remain in contention for the remainder of his career.
“And you can still be competitive, it doesn’t mean you guaranteed the championship. It doesn’t mean winning. Winning is always a priority, but obviously you’re realistic,” he said. “It doesn’t mean that it’s going to happen if you stay the course. You need to shake things up and keep reimagining what it looks like to evolve with what league is at right now, with where some of these talented teams are now.”
The Warriors are still hunting for a major addition this offseason, and they have been frequently linked to Utah Jazz big man Lauri Markkanen. Adding another star player next to Curry will give Golden State a better chance of returning to the playoffs after falling in the play-in tournament this past season.
Remaining in title contention will be important for the Warriors if they hope that Curry will achieve his goal of spending his entire career with the team.
“I’ll continue to make the decisions that are best for me and for my career at the end of the day when it comes to just the imagination. I want to win,” Curry added. “Let’s put it this way, it’s a longwinded way of saying that it if it is a situation where you’re a bottom feeder and it’s just because you want to stay there, I’d have a hard time with that. But I don’t think that’s going to be the reality.”
