SZA Performs ‘SOS’ Medley At 2024 Grammys

SZA took the stage on Sunday night (Feb. 4) as a newly-minted Grammy winner with a special medley of her hit songs, “Snooze” and “Kill Bill.”

Hidden within a long, black trench coat and an oversized hat, the New Jersey native bellowed out the lyrics to her enchanting ballad— “I can’t lose when I’m with you…” Slowly, she peeled herself out of her first look as a suitor appeared behind her. She then transformed for the live rendition of “Kill Bill.”

One dancer stood atop a table with Janelle Monáe and Victoria Monét looking on. Both singers were a bit delighted and slightly taken aback, not wanting to become a casualty of the performance. The brief set was a compact reminder of her SOS tour that VIBE described as a “visual depiction of [SZA] coming into full bloom.”

In her pre-performance monologue, the 34-year-old opened up about the process of creating her Grammy-nominated LP. “I couldn’t figure out who I wanted to be on this album because I had so many points to prove,” she stated.

She continued, “SOS took about five years for me to finish and put out. I consulted the water about every aspect of this album. I never feel nervous in the ocean when I’m swimming in open water. I love the isolation, the vastness, the emptiness. I definitely feel like fear and anxiety are a part of who I am. My intense fear is part of the reason why I have a lot of energy onstage.”

On being the most decorated act this year, SZA expressed, “The heights that I’ve reached are so much bigger than anything I could have imagined for myself. Being the most nominated person at the Grammys is a blessing. I used to cry just imagining what I would say onstage if it ever happened to me, but now it represents the culmination of everything that’s ever happened to me in my entire career.”

Thus far, she’s won Best Progressive R&B Album for SOS, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Ghost In The Machine,” and Best R&B Song for “Snooze.”
