Tate McRae re-creates Britney Spears’ iconic 2001 VMAs look in sheer lace minidress

Oops, she did it again.

Tate McRae paid homage to Britney Spears, on the VMAs 2024 red carpet in a lacy look reminiscent of the Princess of Pop’s 2001 look.

The “Greedy” hitmaker arrived at the Long Island, NY red carpet Wednesday evening in a black balconette bra and matching underwear worn under a see-through lace dress by Roberto Cavalli.

Her revealing ensemble nearly matched the Dolce & Gabbana outfit Spears memorably rocked at the 2001 MTV VMAs. However, the “Toxic” singer’s outfit was navy blue — and she covered up a bit more in boyshort panties.

The 2001 award show also brought fans Spears’ iconic “I’m A Slave 4 U” performance, in which she danced around the stage in a green bra, tiny sequined shorts with a live 7-foot albino Burmese python.

McRae, 21, paired her curve-hugging mini dress with simple black heels by Maison Ernest. She styled her long hair in relaxed curls and added a simple smokey eye to complete her stunning look.

The fashion throwback didn’t escape social media users, with one tweeting, “this is so special to me.”

“The 2001 VMAs look is so iconic, and Tate brought it back with such style and confidence,” a second X user added, with a third declaring, “I knew I had seen that look before.”

“Was it the theme to do this?” another netizen wondered. (Megan Thee Stallion also paid homage to Spears by re-creating her famed snake look from the 2001 award show.)

The “Exes” singer, with her fierce choreography and powerhouse vocals, has received quite a few comparisons to Spears in the past and was even interviewed by the “Womanizer” hitmaker for V magazine in May.

She addressed the frequent comparisons while speaking to Yahoo! in July.

“Britney’s an icon and I adore her. I’ve been inspired by her for so long,” McRae gushed.

“I think that’s just a very natural thing that everybody does any time a girl releases music. They try to find someone to pinpoint her to or compare her to. Obviously I’m like, ‘Sure. Great comparison.’”

McRae is not slated to take the stage at the VMAs this year.

She previously performed her hit “You Broke Me First” at the 2020 award show and a mashup of “She’s All I Wanna Be” and “Uh Oh” at the 2022 MTV Europe Music Awards.

The pop star is nominated for two awards this year: best pop and best choreography for “Greedy.”

McRae has been creating music for years and has certainly enjoyed chart success, though “Greedy” became her first Top 10 hit after “You Broke Me First” peaked at No. 17 in 2021.

“I was just so nervous and terrified [to release ‘Greedy’] because it was such a different sound for me,” she told Billboard in October 2023. She added that its automatic success felt “very, very validating.”

“I think I have a pretty good grasp on what my fans like to hear and what they enjoy. But I don’t think you ever really know,” she noted.

“You never know which direction it’s gonna go, or if it’s going to translate. So it’s been pretty special.”
