Taylor Swift Fans Are Wondering Where ‘Miss Americana’ Has Gone After US Open Hugs With Brittany Mahomes

While Taylor Swift is surely used to facing public criticism, the pop star rarely faces backlash from her own stan accounts—you know, the X.com profiles with her lyrics in their handles and her face as their avatar. But that’s exactly what’s happening after her US Open appearance with alleged Trump supporter Brittany Mahomes.

The Kansas City Chiefs WAG has been at the center of her own controversy since reportedly liking one of Donald Trump’s Instagram posts in August. Despite allegedly unliking the post, Brittany then appeared to double down on social media, denouncing her “haters” and gaining a fan in Trump, himself. “I want to thank beautiful Brittany Mahomes for so strongly defending me,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, describing her and KC Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes as a “great couple” and adding, “See you both at the Super Bowl.”

Taylor Swift has remained silent about politics throughout the 2024 presidential race, but many fans expect her to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris after she supported the Biden/Harris ticket in 2020. Some even took her and Brittany’s separate seating arrangements at the first Chiefs game as an indication of her current political leanings. Therefore, many staunch Swifties were disappointed and angered to see the pair hugging and dancing at the US Open on September 8.

Many fans are referencing a tearful clip from her 2020 documentary Miss Americana, in which she expressed regret for staying silent about Trump during the 2016 election, telling her father, “I need to be on the right side of history.”

While many of Swift’s fans aren’t holding her friendship with Brittany against her, many on TikTok and X.com are asking “where tf” that version of Taylor Swift has gone. “I don’t need a celeb to validate my stances or my vote but damn do I miss the Taylor that gave a fuck,” wrote one fan on X.com who shared an old Swift tweet blasting Trump in 2020. One TikTok user said she’s “done.”

“We would not expect more from Taylor if she had not TOLD US to expect more from her,” wrote another fan who has “(Taylor’s Version)” in her X.com name. A third wrote, “We as Swifties need to call out Taylor for being hypocritical and a performative activist. She cries and makes a huge deal about being an activist in Miss Americana and then surround herself with trumpies and predators. I’m so disappointed in her.”

“I don’t think taylor swift is a republican but I do think she’s an out of touch democrat billionaire who believes that you can separate politics from relationships because she will be protected from everything,” one fan wrote, among other X.com posts.

In a separate post, that same fan added, “I disagree with my friend’s politics when it comes to things like inflation, not human rights, which trump’s administration is looking to completely dismantle if he is elected this year. i’m not looking for choreographed behaviour, just practice what you preach.”

At this point, it’s unclear if Taylor Swift plans to publicly endorse Kamala Harris or respond to her fans’ concerns. “I think maybe because taylor has been criticized for nearly everything she’s ever done since the beginning of her career she started viewing all criticism as hate,” wrote X.com user @_taylorfilmss. “Even the reasonable ones.”
