TCU women’s basketball cancels two games, opens tryouts due to player shortage

As if it couldn’t get any worse.

The TCU women’s basketball team surged to a 14-0 start to the season but has lost its last four games. And the team will forfeit the next two due to a player shortage.

The Horned Frogs, who got off to the best start in program history, have been without graduate transfer Sedona Prince, who broke a finger Jan. 3 during the first loss against Baylor. Jaden Owens, the Horned Frogs’ starting point guard, suffered a torn ACL and meniscus injury just 10 days later in the most recent game against Houston.

Now, per Big 12 policy, the team doesn’t even have enough available players for its upcoming games against Kansas State and Iowa State. That means two forfeits and two losses in the conference standings for TCU, though overall records will not be affected.

The Horned Frogs released a statement on Jan. 17 announcing the cancellations are “a result of injuries within the TCU program and ensure the health and safety of the program’s student-athletes.”

The Horned Frogs have called for open tryouts to fill out the roster for the rest of the season.

TCU women’s basketball will hold open tryouts on Thursday and Friday for full-time students interested in walking-on for the remainder of the 2023-24 season.

The Horned Frogs’ next game will be at home against UCF on Jan. 23.
