Team USA 3×3 Basketball: 2024 Paris Olympics schedule, score, standings, live stream, rules explained

The men’s Olympic team in the 3×3 competition suffered its third loss in as many days on Thursday, falling 20-18 to Lithuania in pool play. The Americans had a chance to tie the game with a 2-point shot from the top of the key in the final second from Canyon Barry, but the attempt clanked off the front of the rim.

Barry led all scorers with nine points in the loss, but Team USA finished just 1 of 13 on 2-point shots, which in 3×3 competition are attempts taken beyond the arc. In the loss, Team USA fell to 5 of 34 on such shots in 3×3 competition this week.

Team USA’s struggles shooting the ball were in part exacerbated by the loss of its best marksman in Jimmer Fredette, who did not play after suffering an apparent groin injury on Wednesday during the team’s loss to Poland. Fredette was suited up but had his groin area taped up.

The U.S. plays again later Thursday at 5:05 p.m. ET vs. Latvia.

3×3 basketball rules explainedThis event has a different set of rules than the traditional five-on-five format basketball fans are accustomed to. This style of basketball is played in a half-court setting with a 12-second shot clock. Field goals are worth one point or two points if the shot is from behind the arc, and there is not an inbounds pass after a made basket.

The game starts with a coin toss, and the winner gets to choose whether to begin the game on offense or defense.

Possession switches between teams after every made basket — no matter if the shot is made or missed. Once a player takes control of the ball inside the arc, they have to dribble it out or pass it to another player outside of the arc before they can attempt a shot.

The team that reaches 21 points first or scores the most points after a single 10-minute period wins. If the game is tied after the period ends, the team that scores two points in overtime first wins.
