Ten Hag not expecting Man Utd sack ahead of D-day with Tuchel open to move

United have made their worst start to a Premier League season after seven games, sitting 14th in the table with eight points.

United majority shareholder Joel Glazer has flown over from the USA for the meeting, which will also include co-owner Jim Ratcliffe, Ineos head of sport Sir Dave Brailsford, United sporting director Dan Ashworth, chief executive Omar Berrada, technical director Jason Wilcox, chief operating officer Collette Roche and chief financial officer Roger Bell.

Ten Hag, meanwhile, has left for a short holiday according to the i newspaper, which writes: “The Dutchman has not been told his job is under immediate threat, i understands, but having spoken to numerous alternatives in the summer, including Thomas Tuchel, Gareth Southgate and Thomas Frank, there is a growing feeling United’s football committee – Glazer, Ratcliffe and Ineos head of sport Sir Dave Brailsford – may pull the trigger sooner rather than later.”

Ten Hag ‘not expecting the sack’

Meanwhile, The Telegraph claims Ten Hag believes he is safe from the sack ahead of the meeting in London on Tuesday.

The Telegraph adds: “The meeting has not been specially convened to discuss Ten Hag’s future and has been in the diary for some time as part of efforts for the executives to meet once a month.

“United’s poor start to the season, despite a £200m summer outlay that took transfer spending under Ten Hag past £600m, has raised new questions about Ten Hag’s suitability for the job.

Former England manager Gareth Southgate is among those in the frame to replace Ten Hag should United opt for a change.”

Tuchel talked up, Van Nistelrooy on an interim basis?

The Mirror reports Tuchel would be open to taking over at Manchester United despite talks breaking down in the summer.

Meanwhile, the Guardian says Ruud van Nistelrooy is on “standby” to step in as interim manager should Ten Hag be dismissed.

The Guardian adds: “Van Nistelrooy is a potential caretaker if time is needed to appoint a permanent replacement.

“If the former United forward impresses he may also be considered as Ten Hag’s permanent successor. In December 2018 Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over as caretaker when Jose Mourinho was removed as United’s manager. Due to the side’s impressive form under the Norwegian he was appointed permanently on a three-year contract, the following March.

“Van Nistelrooy, who became Ten Hag’s assistant in July, managed PSV Eindhoven for all but one match of the 2022/23 season, winning the KNVB Cup. In the summer, Thomas Tuchel was interviewed by Wilcox in Monaco regarding potentially replacing Ten Hag. The German has not been formally approached by United’s football executive about doing so if Ten Hag is removed now, it is understood.”
