Ten Hag pleased with improved performance against Rangers
Saturday 20 July 2024 19:30
A pleased Erik ten Hag said he found Manchester United’s 2-0 pre-season victory over Rangers in Edinburgh enjoyable to watch.
Goals in each half from Amad and Joe Hugill gave the Reds a first friendly win of the summer, at Murrayfield on Saturday.
The manager described the display in Monday’s defeat by Rosenborg as below standard, but was more satisfied with how his players performed against the Scottish Premiership outfit.
It sets us up nicely with tougher tests to come on Tour 2024, presented by Snapdragon, in the United States.

PRE-SEASON PERFORMANCES ARE EVEN MORE IMPORTANT
“Pre-season is friendlies and I want to win every game so I was very disappointed on Monday, especially with the performance. That is even more important in pre-season – the performance. You want to grow and that is what we have seen today in comparison with Monday, which was a low standard. Today was much better, especially in the prospect of aggressiveness, which was much better. We were much more on the front foot and it was a team [effort] in both halves so, yeah, it was enjoyable to watch.”
THIS HAS TO BE AMAD’S YEAR
“We have to see Amad in a different way. Of course, he’s still young but he is not inexperienced any more. Last season he had bad times with bad injuries. Before that he was in the Championship and he had a great season. At the end of last season, he had a very good time in our first team and played some good games. Now for this season, this has to be the year. It’s great that he starts like this. On Monday he couldn’t play, he was not allowed to go into Norway, but today he could play and he played a very good game.”
PLEASED WITH YOUNG PLAYERS
“Joe Hugill is different, that is a player, a young player, who we had much more today on the pitch. I have to say, they were both mixed teams, it was enjoyable to watch, I’m very happy; I’m pleased of course with some performances from some young players.”
ON THE FRONT FOOT IN THE TRANSFER WINDOW
“It is very good that we are also there on the front foot, we are very proactive so [the] leadership is doing a great job in this moment and that’s, I think, how we want to act as United. We are highly ambitious and you have to be on the front foot and be ready for the season. The earlier you get your players in then you can work on your team.”
HARD WORK TO COME BEFORE GUNNERS TEST
“First, we have to make a very good training week – a hard training week. Of course there is travel to LA [Los Angeles] that will take one day and then also we have to acclimatise to a new time. But yeah, then we will play against Arsenal, another step, but before that we have to work very hard for our fitness, for our game model, so we have a lot to do.”
