‘That was nasty’ – Golfer furious as fan violates unwritten rule with millions on the line

Paul Waring was left visibly angered after a fan yelled on his backswing at the DP World Tour Championship.

The world No.105 made his feelings clear by giving the fan a death stare as he walked away after a 70-yard approach.

His frustration was apparent and that was backed up by commentator Wayne Riley, who said: “That was a bit early that. One of his pals.

“They won’t be a pal for too long. That was nasty, right on the downswing.”

The fan in question was guilty of breaching the unwritten rule of breaking their silence before a player has completed their swing.

Waring will hope the incident does not come back to haunt him in Dubai where victory will net the winner a whopping £2.4million.

Waring came into the DP World Tour Championship in fine form after winning £1.2m in last week’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship – his first worldwide victory since 2018.

The prize money saw him net more in one event than his yearly earnings for each season apart from 2019 on the DP World Tour.

“I’ve been knocking on the door a few times,” Waring said. “I had a few seconds. I’ve been in and around a few times. To get over the line again is fantastic and to control it the way I have as well, especially today

“I thought I might have let it slip [in the third round] but to keep a lead the way I was playing, I knew I wouldn’t have two days in a row playing like that. I felt like I had another gear that I needed.

“I don’t want to sound over the top or anything, but I felt like my golf game has been in such a good place over the last year. I just haven’t put it all together. It’s nice to put it all together and get a tournament like this.”

The top 50 in the Race to Dubai rankings are battling it out at the season-ending tournament with plenty at stake besides the hefty cash prize.

In addition, Sunday’s winner will receive 2,000 Race to Dubai points and 2,000 Ryder Cup points which will be of interest to those dreaming of making Luke Donald’s team for next year’s showpiece.

Rory McIlroy remains the favourite to win the DP World Tour Championship and back-to-back Race to Dubai titles following his victory in 2023.

However, Thriston Lawrence was 1,785.02 points behind McIlroy heading into the DP world Tour Championship with McIlroy expected to sail to victory overall.
