A new documentary celebrating the Beach Boys arrives on Disney+ from director Frank Marshall and producer Irving Azoff. The Beach Boys — brothers Brian, Carl, and Dennis Wilson, along with cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine — revolutionized group vocals in the 1960s with their SoCal sound with hits like “Good Vibrations,” “I Get Around,” and “Surfin’ USA.” And now, a new documentary from director Frank Marshall focuses on the band as a whole, blending a range of voices to tell a more complete story. “The Beach Boys” is available to stream now on Disney+.

“It was the blend of everything,” Marshall tells The Associated Press. “It’s the blend not only of the family story, but the blend of harmonies. If you took one element out, you wouldn’t have the Beach Boys.”Marshall’s documentary aims to elevate the voice of each member of the Beach Boys; the media has often focused on the eldest brother, Brian Wilson, for his “unmatched musical imagination” and innovation. While Marshall’s documentary doesn’t downplay Wilson’s musical acumen, it emphasizes that he was not alone in his endeavors.

The documentary also focuses on the band’s darker times, such as when the Wilsons’ father and early band manager sold the Beach Boys’ music catalog for $700,000 in 1969 without their consent. Dennis Wilson drowned in Los Angeles at age 30 in 1984, while Carl Wilson died of cancer at age 51 in 1998. It also examines the health struggles that have impacted Brian Wilson and his ability to make music; the 81-year-old musician is being placed under a legal conservatorship due to a “major neurocognitive disorder.”Marshall’s film, which the director says he had long dreamed of making — it was Irving Azoff’s acquisition of the band’s music rights that ultimately enabled the film’s creation — also includes interviews with early Beach Boys David Marks and Bruce Johnston, and famous fans like Janelle Monae, Lindsey Buckingham, and Don Was.

Currently, the Beach Boys have been busy on their Endless Summer Gold Tour, which kicked off in February in Honolulu, and wraps up in September in Nashville. Actor and musician John Stamos joins the band for 16 of these shows, including their stop at PNC Bank Arts Center in New Jersey on June 1. Stamos will perform on dates between May 30 to June 20, July 5 to July 7, and August 30 to September 1.
