Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa finally achieved their dreams of becoming WWE tag team champions by beating A-Town Down Under on the July 5 episode of SmackDown, but they didn’t get to enjoy it for long.
After DIY beat Austin Theory and Grayson Waller in a rematch on the July 12 SmackDown, general manager Nick Aldis moved quickly to find new challengers for the champs.
On the July 26 edition of SmackDown, a gauntlet match was held to determine the No. 1 contenders for the WWE Tag Team Championships with six of the blue brands top tandems competing.
It initially looked as though The Bloodline would not be involved since Tonga Loa suffered an eye injury during a brawl with Kevin Owens, but Fatu stepped up and established himself as Tama Tonga’s partner.
The Street Profits had an impressive performance in the gauntlet, outlasting the likes of Legado del Fantasma, Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson, Baron Corbin and Apollo Crews, and Pretty Deadly, but The Bloodline had the benefit of being the last entrants.
Fatu and Tonga took advantage of that distinction, beating the weary Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins to earn a title opportunity.
With that, Aldis made DIY vs. The Bloodline official for the go-home episode of SmackDown one night before SummerSlam.
DIY were the clear sentimental favorites Friday night since SmackDown took place in Gargano’s hometown of Cleveland, meaning it was essentially a road game for Fatu and Tonga.
Despite that, The Bloodline rose to the occasion by winning the WWE tag team titles and ending DIY’s reign after less than a month.
