The Umbrella Academy: Will There Be a Season 5?
The Umbrella Academy had an amazing run. The beloved Netflix action seriesâwhich is based on the comic by My Chemical Romanceâs Gerard Wayâaired for four seasons. Thankfully, it didnât pull any punches in the series finale. Even with the oddities of robotic mothers, gorilla-ified siblings, and time-traveling paradoxes, The Umbrella Academy managed to deliver a heartwarming conclusion. In the end, Viktor Hargreeves (Elliott Page) and his superpowered siblings make the ultimate sacrifice to wipe themselves from history and save the universe. But is it really the end for the Hargreeveses?
Sadly, yes. In 2022, showrunner Steve Blackman stated that it was always his plan to end The Umbrella Academy after season 4. âI have what I think is an end to the TV show,â he told Express right after the third season aired. âNetflix may want more than that, but I have a sweet thought of where I think the show should end and where weâre going.â After that finale? We can certainly agree.
Still, fans are hopeful that this isnât the end of The Umbrella Academy as a franchise. While Way plans on writing another volume of the comic book, he announced already that the story will largely adapt season 3 of the Netflix series. If that sounds a bit odd, itâs because thatâs usually the other way around. So what about new stories? Well, Blackman hopes that thereâs room for other characters to shine. Does he mean … spin-offs?
âI think thereâs a lot more story to be told with other characters as well, not just this family,â he told RadioTimes. âI think Gerard Way and Gabriel BĂĄ, who created it, have a lot of thoughts as well. So I hope it isnât the end, but weâll see.â With season 4 concluding the current story, I wouldnât expect Netflix to announce anything right away. You know how it is with time-travel plots, though. No one ever truly goes away forever.
