The German boss then joined Bayern in March 2023, spending 14 months at the club before being sacked.
Lee Carsley has been in interim charge since Southgate’s departure, but his comments in the aftermath of the defeat to Greece on Thursday night have suggested that he’s ruled himself out of the running for the job full-time.
However, when asked that question after the Nations League defeat, Carsley’s answer was far from convincing.
âI was quite surprised after the last camp in terms of the jobâs mine and itâs mine to lose and all the rest of it,â the 50-year-old said.
âMy remit has been clear. Iâm doing three camps, thereâs three games left and then hopefully Iâll be going back to the 21s. Itâs had almost no impact.â
When asked to clarify his specific comment about ‘hopefully’ going back to the Under-21s, Carsley added: âI said at the start I wouldnât rule myself in or out. Thatâs still the case.

“After the first camp I didnât get too excited or believe too much. Iâm very aware that this job is one of the best jobs in the world.
âNothingâs changed. My remit was to do the three camps and then to hand over.”
Lee Carsley suggests he doesn’t want England job in peculiar press conference as he admits he wants to go back to manage the U21 side
As a result, it means that Tuchel is the first external candidate to express an interest in the position.
talkSPORT understands neither Eddie Howe nor out-of-work Graham Potter have had any contact from the FA since Southgate quit after this summer’s European championship final defeat to Spain.
