Tim Weah scores first Serie A goal, leaves with hamstring injury
Monday’s return to Serie A play featured a major high and a worrying low for American attacker Timothy Weah.
Weah scored his first league goal for Juventus in a 3-0 home victory over Como but was substituted off at halftime due to a hamstring injury. The U.S. men’s national team winger delivered a lively 45 minutes in Thiago Motta’s starting lineup as the Bianconeri earned three points on opening weekend.
Samuel Mgangula broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute for Juventus, delivering his first goal for the club on his debut.
Weah extended the Bianconeri’s lead to 2-0 before the interval after rifling a left-footed volley off of the crossbar. Kenan Yildiz’s service from the left wing was finished off by Weah for his second-career goal for Juventus.
However, the American’s evening was cut short after he was visibly seen hobbling after scoring his goal. Andrea Cambiaso added an insurance goal for Juventus in second-half stoppage time, padding the eventual victory.
Fellow American Weston McKennie was an unused substitute in the match.
Juventus announced Tuesday that Weah, along with Khephren Thuram will both be re-evaluated in the near future following respective injuries.
“Following muscular problems suffered during last night’s match, Khephren Thuram and Timothy Weah underwent diagnostic tests this morning at the J|Medical, which revealed for the former a low-grade hamstring injury in his left thigh and for the latter a low-grade hamstring injury in his right thigh. New examinations are scheduled for both players in approximately 10 days’ time,” a club statement read.
Weah’s injury comes at a worrying time with the USMNT set to reportedly appoint Mauricio Pochettino as their new head coach. The USMNT winger endured a tough summer at the Copa America after being sent off in the Americans’ 2-1 group stage loss to Panama.
Juventus next faces a Matchweek 2 trip to Hellas Verona.
