Tom Cochrane, Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor (Blue Rodeo), Sarah McLachlan and Diane Tell Inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame
TORONTO, ON â The Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame (CSHF) celebrated its 2024 class of inductees with an unforgettable evening at Torontoâs legendary Massey Hall. Tom Cochrane, Blue Rodeo Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor , Sarah McLachlan and Diane Tell were honoured with moving tributes and extraordinary performances at Saturday nightâs star-studded Induction Ceremony, presented by Amazon Music.
Nelly Furtado surprised the audience by joining McLachlan for a stirring performance of the latterâs global smash, âAngel.â The evening culminated with an exhilarating rendition of Cochraneâs timeless hit, âLife Is A Highway,â led by Rascal Flatts frontman Gary LeVox who was joined on stage by many of the nightâs performers including Cochrane on harmonica and the nightâs host Marie-Mai.
Cochrane himself kicked off the show, joining his longtime guitarist Bill Bell for the groundbreaking political anthem âLunatic Fringe.â Throughout the night, Cochrane was feted with tribute performances from his vast catalogue of songs, from his solo work and music with his band Red Rider: Brett Emmons (The Glorious Sons) rocked out to âBig League,â and Sam Roberts performed an emotive rendition of the 1979 hit âWhite Hot.â
Taking the stage after being inducted by Triumphâs Gil Moore, Cochrane praised his loyal fans, who continue singing along to his music.
âI wrote them, produced them with my friends and radio got them out to you in one permutation or another, but I realize, make no mistake about it, that you breathe life into these songs,â Cochrane said. âWithout you, they donât exist.â
Blue Rodeo Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor watched an eclectic lineup of artists showcase their wide-reaching influence. Country stars Tim Hicks and Tenille Townes performed the chart-topping âTil I Am Myself Again;â Adam Baldwin, Terra Lightfoot,and Matt Mays, represented the roots scene with a powerful take on âHasnât Hit Me Yet.â Toronto singer-songwriter AHI impressed with his version of the bandâs beloved JUNO-winning single âTry.â Along with Whitehorse, McLachlan performed âDark Angel,â a song sheâs featured on from Blue Rodeoâs 6x-platinum album âFive Days in July.â Cuddy and Keelor later took the stage to perform âLost Together,â the title track from their 2x-platinum 1992 album â accompanied by several of the nightâs performers and their guest inductor Ron MacLean.
âItâs a humbling honour to gather here with so many friends and colleagues to celebrate these songs,â said Keelor. âWith a grateful heart I say thank you all very much.â
Earlier in the night, Metricâs Emily Haines and Jimmy Shaw serenaded McLachlan with a heartfelt performance of âI Will Remember You.â Whitehorse pulled off double-duty, performing McLachlanâs worldwide hit âSweet Surrender.â Lights electrified the crowd with a dynamic performance of McLachlanâs Grammy and JUNO-winning anthem âBuilding A Mystery.â
In addition to her duet performance, Furtado ushered McLachlan into the Hall, praising her dedication to the art of songwriting and her open heart.
âI want to thank my amazing fans for sharing their love,â McLachlan said. âIt is truly the best validation as an artist.â
Diane Tell, one of Quebecâs pioneering female singer-songwriters, was celebrated by some of Canadaâs top French-language artists. RafaĂ«lle Roy honoured Tell with âOn a beau;â Ariane Roy performed âSouvent longtemps Ă©normĂ©ment,â La Zarra sang âSi jâetais un hommeâ and Tell joined Dominique Fils-AimĂ©Â for a stunning performance of âGilberto.â
âThank you for allowing me to join this prestigious family of inductees,â said Tell, who was inducted by Pierre Brassard. âI owe this honour to the great musicians, artists and collaborators and, most of all, to my faithful audience. I provide the words and melodies, but it is you, the audience, who provides the magic.â

The 2024 inductees will be indelibly honoured at the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fameâs permanent location at Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre in Calgary, which features exclusive artifacts and one-of-a-kind memorabilia celebrating Canadaâs greatest songwriters and inductees.
