Torgah shines in West Coast PGA Championship

 Ghana and West African golf sensa­tion, Vincent Torgah, put up another spirited display to clinch the West Coast PGA Championship at the Celebrity Golf Club at Sakumono on Saturday.

Torgah overcame the windy weather conditions with slight accompanying rainstow in the three-day championship, beating 41 regular professionals after play­ing 71, 69 and 71 points.

The championship was the third in the series of competitions ahead of the main tournament in November at Damang.

In all, 50 golfers consisting of 42 regular professionals, 12 seniors and three ladies competed in the three-day championship which teed off on August 21 and ended on Friday, August 23.

Torgah had to negotiate his way against some of the finest golfers including Alfred Kwame from Achimota Golf Club, E.K Owusu, J. Klah, V. Coffie, Francis Torgah and Kojo Barnini.

He told the media how toughthe championship has become due to the hard work by golfers, adding that the state of the course and weather conditions made the latest event a keen one.

Torgah was followed in second position by Alfred Kwame with 71, 71 and 72 points and E.K Owusu in third with 216 points for three days.

J. Klah and V. Coffie grabbed the fourth and fifth positions, respectively.

Emos Korblah stood tall in the seniors category of the compe­tition as he played 147 points over two days to beat11 others including Robert Degbe and Teye Lartey of the Centre of the World’ Golf Club to the second and third positions respectively.

In the ladies division which was played for two days, Jessica Tei of Achimota Golf Club beats Mercy Werner and Felicity Gyea­bour for the top spot.

In brief separate interviews after the event, both past and present competition directors of the PGA, Rev. Akwasi Prempeh and Eric Henaku, expressed satis­faction about the turn up.

They urged the golfers to keep training as the main champi­onship nears.

The next qualifier will be staged at the Royal Golf Club in Kumasi.
