Tottenham set to extend key player’s contract
Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou will hope to see his side improve when the Premier League returns after the international break.
Spurs suffered a 2-1 defeat against Ipswich Town in their final game before the international break, meaning they have won just five of their opening 11 matches of the league campaign.
Postecoglou therefore finds himself under pressure to turn his side’s fortunes around, but the Lilywhites face a trip to reigning champions Manchester City when the domestic football returns later this month.
In the meantime, it appears that Tottenham could soon trigger a contract extension for one of their most important players.
According to Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Spurs are likely to trigger an extension to captain Son Heung-Min’s contract.
The South Korean’s current deal is due to expire at the end of the current season, but Plettenberg claims that the London side are likely to trigger an extension until 2026.
Son could soon have his contract extended by a further year
Son, 32, joined Spurs from German side Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, and he has since played more than 400 times for the club across all competitions.
He has scored 165 goals in that time, as well as registering 87 assists.
The forward remains an integral part of the Tottenham squad, having scored three goals and provided the same number of assists in eight Premier League appearances so far this term.
It is claimed that Spurs are close to triggering the 12-month extension, with the player himself also keen to stay put in London.
It remains to be seen whether or not Tottenham will attempt to negotiate a new long-term deal with South Korea international Son once the extension has been triggered.
